Why no live pot odds in Poker Copilot?

Loyal Poker Copilot customer Fabrizio asks
Why in this beautiful software is there not a function for odds and pot odds?
Fabrizio knows how to ask a question in a flattering way!

This question has been coming up frequently in recent support emails. Here's why Poker Copilot doesn't calculate pot odds for you automatically while you play:

The online poker rooms like Full Tilt ban software that does this live while you play. You can read Full Tilt's policy here.

This sentence is specifically relevant:
For example, poker calculators that automatically extract the current situation from a live game and compute hand probabilities and odds are not permitted.
Instead you need to manually enter your situation into a program like PokerZebra.

Betfair Poker for Mac OS X Reviewed

A comprehensive review of Betfair's Mac OS X poker software is on my macpokersoftware.com site:

Betfair has one of the biggest and most flexible sign-up bonuses. You get to pick if you would like a $50, $250, $500, $1000 or $2500 bonus. Unlike some other sites located on the Ongame network, Betfair pays out the bonus in rates. This means that no matter which bonus you pick you dont have to clear the whole amount! This is great as not all of us are born as grinders.

The Inside Story of the HBGary Hack

If you have any interest in keeping your various online accounts secure; or the computers in your company secure, then read this account of how a high-profile firm that specialises in IT security failed big time to practice IT industry security recommendations.

HBGary's servers were broken into, its e-mails pillaged and published to the world, its data destroyed, and its website defaced. As an added bonus, a second site owned and operated by Greg Hoglund, owner of HBGary, was taken offline and the user registration database published.

and

Most frustrating for HBGary must be the knowledge that they know what they did wrong, and they were perfectly aware of best practices; they just didn't actually use them. Everybody knows you don't use easy-to-crack passwords, but some employees did. Everybody knows you don't re-use passwords, but some of them did. Everybody knows that you should patch servers to keep them free of known security flaws, but they didn't.

Fascinating throughout.

PokerZebra now in the Mac OS X App Store

Almost a year ago I spent a couple of weekends putting together something like PokerStove for Mac OS X. For obscure reasons, I called it PokerZebra. In January I submitted it to the Mac OS X App Store. At first it was rejected. After a three-line alteration I re-submitted it. This time is was accepted. That was a few days ago.

At US$4.99/€3.99, It is priced for impulse purchases. I've sold three copies so far in the first few days. This is only coffee money but I'm happy with it. It took me six weeks to get my first Poker Copilot sale when I launched in July 2008.

I find this Mac OS X App Store experiment intriguing. That a small hobby app like PokerZebra can be available for purchase with Apple handling all the e-commerce, online storage, and downloading opens up a new world of software sales.

If you are a software developer and have an idea for a small Mac OS X app, I encourage you to put together a minimum viable product and submit to to the App Store. Price it low enough for impulse purchases and you may even sell some copies. There's nothing like the first sale or two to motivate you to further product development.

Visit PokerZebra's App Store page.

CarbonPoker for Mac OS X Reviewed

A comprehensive review of CarbonPoker's Mac OS X software is on my macpokersoftware.com site:

The software is great, and compared to other smaller networks which supports Mac, CarbonPoker really comes out on the top, due to the almost endless possibilities provided in the lobby and at the table. But if you are looking for a place which has a lot of players and action you might want to look for another site.

Getting players to join a new online poker site must be a chicken-and-egg problem: "I won't play there because there are not enough players", people tell themselves.

A Sign that Your Software Product is Mature

You know your software product is mature when the #1 support request is, "Help, I lost my license key!".

From Transmit's support page:

From Balsamiq's support page:

For Poker Copilot, it is also my most common support request. Except the days when PokerStars or Full Tilt Poker release an update that breaks Poker Copilot. :(

That's enough blogging for today. I need to resend some people their lost license keys!

Purchasing Poker Copilot via PokerStars Transfer No Longer Possible

People sometimes ask if they can purchase Poker Copilot by transferring via an online poker room. I've long had a policy of allowing this, via PokerStars transfer or Full Tilt Poker transfer.

Yesterday, however, when I tried to routinely cash out the money in my PokerStars account, the cash out was cancelled. Here is an excerpt from an email PokerStars sent me explaining why they did this:

Our transfer tool is only meant to help players fund their accounts when they are unable to deposit with deposit options currently available to them. All funds added to your account via transfer must be used to play at our tables.

We are restricted by our license agreement in the Isle of Man and this prevents us from being able to offer a real money transfer service for the purpose of cashing out.

In this case, your cashout has been cancelled and funds have been returned to your account balance. You are welcome to play with the funds or to return it back to the sender.

You should use a money transferring service outside of PokerStars for transfers which are not meant to be played at our tables.

I checked the PokerStars security FAQ and they make the situation absolutely clear:
Q: Can I cashout the funds I received via transfers?

A: As per our Terms of Service, transfers are only allowed for the purpose of playing at our tables.

Therefore I'll have to decline any future requests to purchase Poker Copilot via a PokerStars funds transfer.

There will be two $1+$0.10 tournaments on PokerStars on Sunday in the Poker Copilot Club.

Tournament #1 starts at 12 noon ET, which is 5pm in the UK, and 6pm in Western Europe - good for us living in Europe and the Mediterranean

Tournament #2 starts at 6pm ET, which should suit Americans and Canadians.

Here's how to join the club:

  • If you don't already have it, download the free PokerStars software from www.pokerstars.com
  • Open the main poker lobby, then click on the Home Games tab
  • Click the 'Join a Poker Club' button
  • Enter my Club ID number: 109376

Every player will almost certainly be using Poker Copilot!

Software will always have bugs :(

Someone uncovered an obscure bug in the Java computer language which has been there since, probably, for ever. Which is 15 years or so in the Java universe. The bug hangs Java when trying to convert one specific string to a floating point number. This also affects some other programming languages which use the same de facto standard algorithm.

A few years back we discovered that Java's implementation of binary search - also based on a de facto standard algorithm "proved" correct - returns incorrect results under certain extreme circumstances. This one is now fixed. We think.

There are probably obscure bugs in most every modern programming language - and therefore in most every software built using modern programming languages - that can remain hidden for years, even decades.

Poker Copilot 2.81 Now Available

This week's update is a bit early. That's because a problem with handling PokerStars Tournament Home Games is causing me a lot of support grief.

Poker Copilot 2.81 is now available to download.

What's changed:

  • The hand replayer now uses ⌘+left / ⌘+right to jump between streets. You can still use up and down arrow keys to move between hands.
  • Most of the summaries remember column orders. Move "Aggression %" to the first column and it will stay there for next time you open Poker Copilot.
  • Added support for FTP multi-entry tournaments. But read here for limitations. Thanks to loyal Poker Copilot customers who sent me a range of multi-entry tournament summaries.
  • Added "Hero" filter to "More" menu - although it doesn't quite work as intended in the "Players" summary yet

What's fixed:

  • PokerStars home game tournaments were not being recognised as tournament, causing the HUD not to work and stats to get confused. If you had this problem already, you'll need to reset your Poker Copilot database to correct your stats. (File -> "Reset Database")
  • On Merge Network rooms, such as Carbon Poker, the HUD now works simultaneously on multiple tables at the same stake level.

Update Instructions:

  1. Download the latest version here.
  2. Open the downloaded file.
  3. Drag the Poker Copilot icon to the Applications icon. If prompted to replace an existing version, confirm that you do want to replace.

Now you are done and ready to hit the tables.
