16 Days to First Page of Google Results

This morning I did my daily check of macpokersoftware.com. I typed "Mac Poker Software" into Google, turned off the Google customisations that makes search results tailored to my searching history, and - bingo! There was macpokersoftware.com in spot 8 on the first page of results.

A big thanks to Patrick McKenzie who gave me the strategy to do this. We had our initial email conversation on January 13th. Now, two weeks and two days later, results are already apparent.

The story started here.

Hey, congrats - I wonder if it will translate into a demonstrable increase in sales - it's possible people would have found your software anyway given that poker copilot is right above macpokersoftware.com in the results...

Got me thinking as a bit of an aside. In my work stuff I have this idea that things like KPIs, dashboards and decision support systems like Business Intelligence blinker people who use them. While this can be a good thing (ie, it focuses you on certain factors in making a decision), it also excludes things that you may not have thought of. In the worst case scenario, it leads to situations where the monitoring ends up focussing on the measures themselves rather than the reason why we're measuring things. For example (and I'm not saying this is the case with you), the reason you're doing this SEO stuff is to increase your market share (and ultimately profit). Getting on to the 1st page of results in Google is a step towards that goal, but not success in and of itself.

I reckon you'll find the same thing with users of Poker Co-Pilot - people can become so hung up on the statistics that they forget about why they're using the statistics in the first place, which is to become better players. The kerfuffle you wrote about a while ago on your users almost revolting about a decision to not include certain stats because of the guaranteed poor quality due to small samples is an example of that. Some people become addicted to measurement for its own sake, regardless of the original purpose for collecting data, or even whether the data is reliable.

Hmm - maybe I should go off and write my own blog post ;)
